Update! On March 13th, 2012, NPR did a great story on financial scams targeting the elderly. Pete Rendina with the US Postal Inspection Service gave some great information. Click here to learn about some of the scams and what the Postal Service is doing to prevent and catch these scammers. This is some great follow up from the PY information from Eric Trautman!
Packed House! In the third workshop in the Protect Yourself series, “The Sandwich Generation: Taking Care of Aging Parents, ” we presented to a group of women working through a major juggling act- caring for both their parents and their own children.
Glass Jacobson’s senior financial advisor Christine Schmitz shared some interesting facts with us, including and AARP number that 44% of 45-55 year olds have at least one living parent and one child under the age of 21. That is a lot of sandwich generation women. Christine talked to us about the importance of long-term care insurance as medicare/medicaid does not pick up much of nursing home care. You could be on the hook for a major bill: median cost of nursing home care right now is $75,190 per year! Check out the rest of her presentation below to find out what you need to do to protect yourself financially if you are a member of the Sandwich generation, and contact Christine if you have any questions.
Hodes, Pessin & Katz, P.A. attorney Kimberly Battaglia talked to us about ways to protect our assets. She dove a little deeper on medicaid/medicare, and revealed the importance of proper planning to ensure mom and dad don’t lose all their assets to the state should they end up in nursing care. Kim took us through asset protection, from titling to setting up trusts. You can see her full presentation below.
We had a scarily insightful presentation from Eric Trautman, Head of Security at Oakcrest Retirement Community. Scammers are smart, quick on the feet and constantly developing new ways to defraud you and your trusting parents. Eric told us about one recent scam where a person visited a nursing home to do “free hearing tests.” Of course to follow was a high pressure push to buy new (expensive!!) hearing aids. Eric taught us how to recognize credit card and phone scams, as well as prevent identity theft. Check out Eric’s 10 Tips to Prevent Scams, and view his presentation below. You can contact Eric with questions here.
Stay tuned for more information on the next workshop on March 21st, Business 201!
